North Carolina, Our Winter Respite! Part 1, January 22-26

When we moved to Utah, we finally made a goal (plan) to have a winter break every year for about a month during January or February.  I annually get the January blues due to Christmas being over and it being so cold and gloomy outside.  I have used a lot of different techniques to get through it each year but have always thought just getting away from the cold for a few weeks would be a great idea.

My sister Nancy and her husband Dale have recently relocated to Southport, North Carolina, so for our trial run at this great escape, we are here soaking in the sunshine and all things southern for the next 3 1/2 weeks.  I was born in Alabama and spent the first 7 years of my life there so I really am a southern gal at heart!  We have been here for just a few days so far, but I've already had shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, and some bbq pork nachos.  It's about 20 degrees warmer here so where it's not exactly warm yet, it's definitely warmer.  Loving it so far!!

Day 1 and 2--Raleigh/Durham--Stayed with Cierra and Alfredo's family in Morrisville, Old Tobacco Factories, Duke University and Gardens, LDS Temple and lunch in Apex, NC

Days 3-4 St. James Plantation, Southport, North Carolina

We got the grand tour of Nancy and Dale's beautiful community.  We got to tour the model home of the house they are building and see the lot their home will be on.

Nancy and Dale's building site for their new home!
Beautiful covered bridge in St. James Plantation

St. James Plantation is a master-planned community with four golf courses and club houses, pools, gyms, tennis and pickle ball courts, walking paths, 200 pounds and so many trees-deciduous and lots of pines!  So beautiful!  Love, love love the houses here!

We had lunch at KoKo Cabana's on the pier on Oak Island!  Delicious fried-green tomato tacos with fried goat cheese and street corn!  Oh my!

View of the beach from the new pier!

I forgot to mention that St. James Plantation also has their own private beach club complete with this gorgeous pool.

Well this scared us just a tiny bit! We are looking forward to our three weeks here in this glorious part of the country!   Already feeling the inversion clearing from our brains.  Aaah!

Sunday we attended church at the Southport Branch.  It reminded us so much of our Wellsville Branch.  We felt very welcome and included.  Their was a nice linger longer potluck lunch afterwards that we enjoyed.  The church is located in a warehouse and the lunch was in the "bay" or garage section of the building.  It's amazing how the church can take a basic warehouse and turn it into an LDS Chapel.  It had the same carpet, signage, and furnishings that you would see in any church building.  Loved it!

We drove to Wilmington to have dinner with Adam and Heather Braithwaite and their children, Kiera, Avery, Callie, and Liam.  We had a lovely visit with them and a tour of their beautiful golf course home.  North Carolina is charming and it's easy to see why Nancy and Dale are retiring here.
