February 26 would have been my mother's 95 birthday. Hannah texted me and said she thinks of her often and that hers is one of the only birthdays she can really remember the date of. She also said she thinks my mom has been spending a lot of time in the NICU with Violet over the past few weeks and that Mom is one of Hannah's guardian angels. Happy birthday, Mom, in heaven! We miss you and love you and it warms my heart and wouldn't surprise me a bit to think that you might be hanging out with Violet and helping her as she develops and grows.
Violet is doing great! She amazes us all every single day with the progress she is making. She is totally off oxygen and just has one feeding tube in through her nose until she learns better how to nurse. She's going to get it really soon and once she does, it will just be a short time until she can go home. She truly is our little warrior princess! She's a fighter but she's also very sweet. She's over the 4 pound mark and growing stronger and bigger every day. She's starting to fill out and even seems to have a couple of fat rolls. She's looking more and more like a full term newborn every day!
Little Jordan is doing great too! Todd's family has pretty much been quarantined since they got him home from the hospital but today they went to an hour of church. He is strong and getting stronger every day! His little smile shows just how happy he is to be home and healthy again!
This was a very busy week. We both worked hard on our training modules and have been plugging along getting ready to help the Family History Library guests. On Monday night, most of our social activity group went to dinner at a nice local Italian restaurant called Michelangelo's. It was delicious and fun to be with this sweet group of friends. On Tuesday, the mission had a special Senior Missionary Recognition Night at the Tabernacle in Temple Square. Jenny Oaks Baker (pretty famous violinist) and her four children performed for us. It was incredible. They are such a talented family and you could just tell how much they love each other and the Lord. They bore their testimonies through music and it was amazing! We love being in this mission. There's always something going on and we are always being spiritually fed.
It was a beautiful evening and the stars were out and we passed by this marvelous statue as we came out of the Tabernacle. This is truly a special place.
On Tuesday afternoon, we attended a session at the Bountiful Temple with our friend, Janice Simmons. We hadn't been in that temple since Glen and Kendi were sealed there many years ago. It's beautiful and brought back sweet memories.
On Wednesday, we got to meet Tyler and Jaimee and their three kids for lunch at the Olive Garden in Sandy. We love our schedule which gives us time to attend the temple or do personal family history research on Tuesday afternoons (and all day on the first Tuesday of each month) and we work 1-9 on Wednesday which gives us a morning off to get some things done or meet up with family for lunch!
We found out this week that we have Mormon Pioneer ancestors from my Grandma Gardner's side of the family. My cousin Bob Gardner from New York commented on my Facebook post that we have Pioneer relatives buried in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. None of my siblings were aware of this and figured we didn't have Pioneers in our line since our parents were converts to the church. I'm excited to explore this more and get to know some of the stories behind these people. The blessings of our new assignment are already coming to pass! We are beginning to feel the Spirit of Elijah in our work and in our daily lives as we strive to connect with our past.
We are excited to live in Salt Lake City for a lot of reasons, one of them being that their are so many great places to eat! We love to eat out and are getting around to a lot of our favs plus some new places. A blast from the past was eating at Hire's on Thursday night. It was built just after Mike graduated from high school so was a favorite place for him during his University of Utah days. He's taken our family there a lot over the years and it's a fun throw back to yesteryear.
On Friday evening, we got to pick up Sophie and Tucker from a birthday party they were at in Olympus Cove. We had a fun sleepover with them and a great time together on Saturday. They slept in sleeping bags in our living room (since we only have one bedroom) and fell asleep with our fire going on our TV. They loved it! In the morning, we had pancakes, bacon and eggs then the kids and I went to our apartment swap meet where we found a few treasures! After that we headed to Temple Square, City Creek Mall for lunch and to the Family History Museum (and a quick stop at our work). We had a blast! Sophie didn't have a warm coat and Tucker completely forgot his in his parents car, so we improvised. They looked like little orphans but they were warm and happy!
That evening, after meeting Tyler to drop off Sophie and Tucker, I drove to Highland to visit my friend, Jo. We had a great time catching up and she gave me some art to hang in our apartment! Afterwards, I went to Jaimee's dad, Grant and and his wife Teresa's house and met up with Hannah and Chase there and we had fun visiting and playing Spoons! Mike opted out as he was pretty wiped out from the big week and was preparing to teach the lesson in Priesthood meeting the next day. He's excused!
This morning (Sunday, March 4th), we woke up to about 10 inches of beautiful snow and it was still snowing hard for about 3 more hours. When we left for church at about 12:30, the sun was shining and it was very comfortable and the walk to church was so beautiful and refreshing!
It's the time of year when the snow melts away pretty fast, plus we learned today that Salt Lake is very good with snow removal. The sidewalks were completely clear and the roads looked good too. We had a family dinner planned for tonight so we were a little anxious that the snow would deter some from coming, but luckily the snow cleared out, the roads were plowed and everyone made it (except for Livi who had a ward event at BYU). We had a fun and lively evening together in our little apartment!
Our sweet Paul passed away two years ago tomorrow from Kidney Cancer. It was fun looking at some of Joni's favorite picture memories of him. We miss you, Paul, so much!
We had too much fun and we surely do love our family! Everyone brought something and we used paper plates, plastic cups and silverware so it was super easy for me. We had chicken enchiladas and all things Mexican! Brownies with vanilla ice cream and homemade hot fudge on top for dessert. Erin said when Mike brought hers to her, "That's the most delicious thing I've ever seen!" Made me laugh and made my day! It was pretty delicious!
Another week has come and gone. We are one step closer to being able to be on the floor and being able to see miracles happening everyday as we get to help people search for their ancestors. We are both excited for this new week ahead! Here are a couple of thoughts to think about this week! Love you and hope that you will feel your Heavenly Father's love and the love of our Savior in your lives!
Isn't that the truth? What would we have done these past few weeks with our babies in such precarious situations without our own prayers and the many prayers of others. Our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. Keep praying and so will we for our family and for your families. We are all in this together!
