Summer Vacation Part 2, Aiken, SC

Jenny and Eli took us to the Atlanta airport where we picked up our rental car and we headed to Aiken, SC.  It was less than a three hour drive to our hotel in Aiken where we met Kathy!  She showed us around their town and we enjoyed seeing the Hopeland Gardens.  It rained heavily, but we were able to get back to the car before we got drenched.  It sure is green in the south due to their heavy rains.  Wish we could tap into just a fraction of it in the west.

This tree-lined street was so beautiful.  Reminded us of the entrance to southern plantations.

Aiken has a lot of beautiful horse country.  This horse museum was closed but it was located on the Hopeland property so we got to see it from the outside at least! Such a gorgeous place!

We had dinner with Kathy and Keith at Red Lobster.  It was delicious.  Kathy and Mike got the endless shrimp which was so good and they had it in so many different ways, fried, coconut, scampi, popcorn, just like Bubba described!  After dinner, we went to their place and watched a movie.  It was a lot of fun being with them, catching up and seeing where they live.

Tuesday morning, June 8, we had breakfast with Kathy before heading on to North Carolina.  We like to try local food so Kathy found this promising little breakfast spot in the heart of horse country.  It was called the Track.  We were all very hopeful.  Turns out it looked closed, but was actually open.  We gave it a try and were the only ones there and it was just an older grandma cooking the food in the back and it was pretty much something you would cook at home but not quite as good.  Oh well, bless her heart.  She was an endearing woman and we weren't sorry we stopped by.

The drive to Nancy and Dale’s house is about 4 1/2 hours and it gets pretty monotonous with the tree lined highways but it sure is green! We made good time and arrived in time to go to the beach for dinner at Koko Cabana! Got the goat cheese and fried green tomato tacos that I have been thinking about since our last trip! I was not disappointed.

Always a warm welcome!
