Then we headed to Beale Street, birthplace of the Blues. It is said to be one of the most iconic streets in the U.S. Iconic: Similar to "classic," iconic is generally restricted to more recent, highly original, influential, or unique, works of art, artists, or performers. As such they are now well-established and widely celebrated in popular culture.
Lots and lots of live music everywhere.
Lots of stores with creepy voodoo stuff!
The first thing we noticed was the extreme heat and humidity! We never got used to it, but we didn't let it keep us from having a great time!
The famous Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis has a fun story about how the owner brought some ducks back from a hunting trip and hired a circus trainer to train them to come down the elevator in the morning (they live on the roof) and walk to the fountain in the lobby where they hangout all day and then at 5 pm they have a ceremony where they walk the red carpet back to the elevator and retire for the evening. We just happened to be there right at the right moment...
We saw the mighty Mississippi River. We would have liked to talk a walk along it, but it was just too hot!
Next, we headed to Graceland where we were dazzled by all things Elvis!
By now, we were all hungry again, so Todd and Kimiko took us to their favorite fried chicken hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Memphis, that just happened to be featured on Diner's Drive-ins and Dives, and The Best Thing I Ever Ate. We loved it!
It was so fun being with this sweet family again. We had so much fun with Jaxon! He is an adorable, busy little three year old! (Turned 3 August 13th!)
Next, we headed to Oxford which is a little over an hour away to their apartment. We felt grateful for A/C and loved being in their home with them! These next two pictures are the view of their beautiful complex from their balcony. I was hoping to see lots of fireflies, but we only got to see a few. They were pretty cool though!
On Saturday, we went to the park, got shaved ice (yum!), saw Oxford, shopped for some Ole Miss gear and had dinner on the Square.
Just playing around on some fun musical instruments at the park.
This cute bookstore is where Jax gets to go for storytime!
Hanging out with William Faulkner!
We had dinner at the Ajax Diner. Todd recommended the Catfish and it was delicious... I should have ordered it, but he was nice enough to share it with me since mine was so so. So much so that I can't even remember what I ordered!
Sunday, we attended church with Todd's family. They have such a nice ward and we felt very welcomed there. Todd and Kimiko have really enjoyed living in Oxford. They have made a lot of really nice friends both from their ward and from the community and school.
In the afternoon, we took a nice Sunday stroll down a shaded path that was an old railroad track at one time in the past:
Next, we drove over and walked around William Faulkner's home, Rowan Oak:
It's always fun to explore historic places! We also drove around a bit and saw where the famous football family, the Mannings live. That was kind of exciting!
Monday, was Ole Miss day! We finally got to see where Todd spends so much of his time! It is a beautiful campus and it's a great place for him to be.
Some cool rooms in the administration building:
This is the statue of James Meredith, who was the first Black man to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962.
This is Todd's cubicle in the School of Business Administration.
This is the famous "Grove" where the football teams runs through and it's packed with fans on game day!
These Magnolia Trees were planted to represent the Ole Miss students who served and died in World War II.
We had lunch at Handy Andy's, another local dive with some of the best, greasiest burgers around!
Tuesday, was our final day in Oxford. We had breakfast at the Big Bad Breakfast Restaurant, another one of Todd and Kimiko's favorite place. Todd had this: Pylon
Fried hot dog with chili, slaw, cheddar, mustard, chopped
pickles, onion, jalapeno peppers, and crackers on a sweet waffle. (we
just pile it all on!) no side.
We had to say goodbye to Kimiko and Jax and Todd drove us to the airport for our flight back home. We had a fabulous time and can I just say Todd and Kimiko know how to eat!! We both gained a few pounds but fortunately we planned for it and lost a few before we went! Ha! Can't wait til next time!!!
